It's hard to think it's been over fifteen years since Bloc Party's stunning debut Silent Alarm grabbed the hearts of countless independent kids. They've remained pretty quiet since the publication of Hymns in 2016, with the exception of a successful tour in 2018 and 2019 that revisited their debut in its entirety. They've finally returned to reveal their sixth studio album, Alpha Games, which will be released via Infectious/BMG on April 29, 2022.
The album's first song, "Traps," is a rowdy return to the band's scorching post-punk style, which sounds larger-than-life. Bloc Party's Kele Okereke delivers his biting jabs with a sardonic edge while the band engulfs him in noisy guitar fuzz and the ever-satisfying drumming that made them one of the brightest post-punk acts in the early '00s.
"We knew 'Traps' had to be the first thing people heard from this album from the time we composed it; playing it in soundchecks on our previous tour before it was ready and hearing how it sounded in those enormous rooms and outdoors," Okereke stated of the song.
