Akbar-Birbal story: Everyone's thinking is the same

Once King Akbar was discussing a particular subject in his court. On that subject, he sought their opinion from all the people present in the royal court. In such a situation, all the ministers present in the court responded according to their intelligence. The king was very surprised to see that everyone's answer was completely different from each other. On this, King Akbar asked Birbal the reason behind this happening and asked, 'Why not everyone's thinking is the same?'

Birbal smiled at the king's question and said, 'Maharaj, of course, people's thinking is different from each other in many respects, but everyone has the same thinking on certain subjects.' With this talk of Birbal, the court proceedings would end. And everyone goes to do their work.

The same evening King Akbar goes for a walk with Birbal in his garden, when he repeats the same question again. 'Birbal I asked you why not everyone's thinking is the same? Answer this question to me.' With this, once again a debate erupts between Akbar and Birbal on this issue. When King Akbar does not understand Birbal's point despite millions of efforts, he devises a trick to explain his point.

Birbal says, 'Your Majesty, I will prove to you that in some cases everyone has the same thinking. Just issue a decree. The decree will be that on the coming new moon night, everyone will bring a lot of milk from their respective homes and put them in a dry well built in your garden and the one who does not obey this decree will be punished severely.

Although King Akbar finds this talk of Birbal foolish, he gets the royal decree issued according to Birbal's instructions. On the orders of the king, the soldiers roam the whole state and tell everyone about this decree. On hearing this decree of the king, everyone started discussing that pouring milk in a dry well is a foolish act. Still, there was the order of the king, so everyone had to obey. Everyone waited for the new moon night.

Soon, the new moon night also arrived and everyone gathers from their respective homes, taking a lot each from the well. One by one, all turn the lot in the well and go towards their respective homes. King Akbar and Birbal are watching this whole scene secretly.

When everyone turns their lota into the well and leaves, Birbal takes King Akbar near the well and says, 'Sir, see, did your order fill the well with milk? On Birbal's talk, King Akbar peeped into the well and saw that the well was filled with water till the top. Seeing this, they are very surprised and they are also angry.

King Akbar says to Birbal, 'I had issued a decree to pour milk into the well. Then why was the well filled with water instead of milk? All of them also thought that it is dark on the new moon night. Now in this darkness, everyone will see only the lota, not the milk or water in the lota.

Birbal said, 'Maharaj it is clear from the fact that everyone has the same thinking in some matters.' Now King Akbar understood Birbal's point very well.

The lesson to be learned from this story is that in the same personal situation, everyone's thinking becomes the same.
