Akbar-Birbal Story: Half the Reward

This is about the time when Emperor Akbar and Birbal met for the first time. At that time everyone knew Birbal as Mahesh Das. One day Emperor Akbar, being pleased with Mahesh Das's smartness in the market, invites him to reward him in his court and gives his ring as a token.

After some time Mahesh Das leaves for his palace with the idea of meeting Sultan Akbar. Reaching there Mahesh Das sees that there is a very long line outside the palace and the concierge is letting everyone inside only after taking something from everyone. When Mahesh Das's number came, he said that Maharaj has called me for the reward and he showed the Sultan's ring. Greed came in the mind of the concierge and he said that I will let you in on one condition if you give me half of the reward.

After listening to the concierge, Mahesh Das thought something and accepted his words, and went to the palace. Arriving in the court, he waited for his number to come. As soon as Mahesh Das's turn came and he appeared, Emperor Akbar recognized him on seeing him and praised him a lot in front of the courtiers. Emperor Akbar said that tells Mahesh Das what is needed in the reward.

Till Mahesh Das said that whatever I ask, will you give me a reward? Emperor Akbar said that exactly, what demands do you ask for. Then Mahesh Das said that Maharaj should reward me with 100 whips on the back. Everyone was surprised to hear Mahesh Das and Emperor Akbar asked why do you want this.

Then Mahesh Das told the whole incident with the concierge and finally said that I have promised that I will give half of the reward to the concierge. Then Akbar got angry and got the concierge 100 whips and seeing Mahesh Das's smartness, kept him as the chief advisor in his court. After this Akbar changed his name from Mahesh Das to Birbal. From then till today, many tales of Akbar and Birbal became famous.

We should do our work honestly and without any greed. If you do something with the hope of getting something, you always have to face bad consequences, like the greedy concierge in this story.
